Overview
Why is Mathematics/Mathematical Literacy compulsory for all students?
Being mathematically literate enables persons to contribute to and participate with confidence in society. Access to Mathematics is therefore a human right in itself.
The study of Mathematics develops a critical awareness of how mathematical relationships are used in social, environmental, cultural and economic relations the necessary confidence and competence to deal with any mathematical situation without being hindered by a fear of mathematics an appreciation for the beauty and elegance of mathematics a spirit of curiosity a love for mathematics
In addition the study of mathematics can enable a student to:
recognize that mathematics is a creative human activity
develop deep conceptual understanding
acquire the specific knowledge and skills necessary for
problem solving in 'reallife' situations
the study of related subjects
further study in mathematics
Brief Policy
We are in the midst of a challenging new phase in our teaching of mathematics. A positive approach is essential in order to maintain standards and motivate students. Our aim is for each student not only to enjoy mathematics, but to produce the best possible result he can. To this end we try to relate the subject to their world where possible, and strive to show enthusiasm and enjoyment in the subject and in their progress, however slow it may be.
We expect and demand the highest standards from our students. Explanatory notes and examples are provided and it is the responsibility of the students to ensure that these are copied down/ pasted in neatly. A neat and wellorganised notebook is an extremely useful studyaid. We do insist that students show all necessary working details for class and homework as it is the methods involved in achieving the solutions which are of paramount importance. We encourage students to redraw geometry figures for the same reasons.
The onus is on the student to catch up any notes/homework, etc which he may have missed as a result of absenteeism for whatever reason. Teaching and learning in the classroom continue even if students are away on school business.
Where possible, we aim to cover for teachers who are absent by redistributing the absent teacher's students into a set or sets of a similar level. It is imperative that students placed in this situation cooperate and take full advantage of the fact that they are not being left untaught. Besides being a common courtesy any work covered during such time will be considered to have been thoroughly taught and will not be retaught by the regular teacher on his/her return.
Homework
Homework should be set every day. Although time constraints do not permit us to check each book individually every day spot checks are made from timetotime, and the opportunity is offered in each lesson to discuss any problems which may have arisen from the previous day's homework. If your son insists that he has completed his work during class (possibly in the case of quicker workers) revision of work covered at an earlier stage is always a worthwhile alternative.
