‘Contextualising the Films of Mani Kaul’ – A Symposium with Screenings

This symposium explores the work of Mani Kaul (1944-2011), by combining papers, discussion and a screening of Siddheshwari (Mani Kaul, 1989). Marking the beginning of our programme of Mani Kaul films at the ICA, this event seeks to contextualise the filmmaker’s work, and to mark the connections between the experimental aesthetics used by Kaul and similar practices taking place within Indian cinema at the time. As an essay filmmaker, Mani Kaul engages with a broad range of subjects including the art, classical music, literature and theatre of India, and we will use this symposium as a space to reflect on the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of his films.

In collaboration with the Courtisane Film Festival and the Otolith Group, and with the support of Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities.

Biography

Laura Rascaroli completed a Laurea in Modern Letters at the Università Cattolica of Milan in 1992, specialising in Social Communications and with a Film Studies dissertation. She was awarded a Higher Doctorate by the NUI in 2014.

She is Professor and Co-Head of the Discipline of Film and Screen Media at University College Cork, where she lectures on European and world cinema, on nonfiction and on film theory. She has a substantial track record of scholarly publications, successful grant applications, collaborative research, project management, and conference organisation.

Her research interests span art film, modernism and postmodernism, film theory, spatiality and geopolitics, nonfiction, the essay film, and first-person cinema. She has an enduring interest in broad theoretical questions including realism and representation, subjectivity and first-person expression in film, and communicative negotiation. Much of her work focuses on European cinema, also in relation to issues of social, political, intellectual and artistic European history. She has authored or coauthored five research monographs and three edited collections, and over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Her work has been translated into languages including Chinese, Italian, French, Polish, Spanish, German and Farsi.

Her most recent book is How the Essay Film Thinks (OUP, 2017). She is currently co-editing a collection on theorising film through contemporary art, and is developing new work on the lyric essay film and on film and territory.

She has extensive external examining experience at both undergraduate programme level and in PhD examinations. She has served on national and international advisory boards, expert panels, selection committees and professional bodies. She is currently Vice-Chair of the ECREA Film Studies Section. She is a reviewer for many international journals and publishers, currently a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Italian Cinema and Media Studies, [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film and Moving Image Studies, and the International Journal of Film and Media Arts; and of the advisory boards of Screen, Comunicazioni SocialiAniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image, L'Avventura: International Journal of Italian Film and Media Landscapes, and Studies in Arts and Humanities. She is a co-founder and General Editor of Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media and is Deputy Editor of Studies in Documentary Film.
